NAT70National/PoliticsBJP denies refusing venue for Sonia's Bhopal rallyBhopal, Oct 15 IANS Refuting the Congress' charge that the Madhya Pradesh government was not permitting party president Sonia Gandhi to hold a public rally here, a minister Wednesday said he was ready to not only help arrange the meet but also to arrange a large crowd. In the war of words soon after Tuesday's announcement of the assembly polls in the state on Nov 25, state Congress president Suresh Pachouri had accused the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP government in the state of pressuring the bureaucracy not to provide land for Gandhi's rally, scheduled for Sunday. In response, state Public Works Minister Kailash Vijaygargiya said Wednesday, "why talk about the venue, I am ready even to extend help to arrange a large crowd for Gandhi's public meeting at Bhopal or elsewhere in Madhya Pradesh, if the Congress wished so."Denying Pachouri's allegation that the government had influenced police authorities for not providing the historic Lal Parade ground here for Gandhi's public meeting, Vijayvargiya told reporters: "The police had offered to make the ground available on any day after Oct 21 as preparations were already under way for the Police Commemoration Day parade." Vijayvargiya also advised the Congress to opt for the Jamboree Maidan in the BHEL township area where BJP leader L.K. Advani recently addressed a public meeting. --Indo-Asian News Servicess/am/vm237 Words*15102232

BUS33BusinessLiquidity crunch creating pressure on car demand: HondaKolkata, Oct 15 IANS The liquidity crunch and exchange rate fluctuations are creating pressure on margins and demand for premium cars in India, a top official of Honda Siel Cars India Ltd said here Wednesday.According to the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, sale of Honda Siel cars dropped 19 percent in the April-September period."Early reports of sales in October are encouraging that marks the beginning of the festive season," Jnaneswar Sen, Honda Siel vice-president marketing told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of the company's new City model. In 2007-08, the company sold 62,800 cars consisting of models like City, Accord and Civic.Honda Siel is planning tie-ups with public sector banks as several private sector banks and non-banking finance companies are already present in auto-finance business."While we have had relationships with several private sector banks for financing, some of our dealers have now started working with state-owned banks like State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank," Sen said. The fluctuation in the value of rupee and specifically its depreciation against Yen have forced the company to look at more local manufacturing of components.Sales of passenger cars of Honda Siel have dropped about 45 percent in September, following the phase out of its City EX model."The drop in sales of our cars last month was mostly because of our decision to stop sales of the City EX model. The drop is not an aberration," Sen said. The model has now been replaced by the new City model called the 'Third Generation', launched in September, he said.--Indo-Asian News Serviceag/sj/vm292 Words15102038
2008-10-15 12:05:10Mayawati, Congress trade charges Second Lead
NAT65National/Politics/EconomyMayawati, Congress trade charges Second LeadLucknow, Oct 15 IANS Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Wednesday accused Congress president Sonia Gandhi of "hatching a political conspiracy" against the Bahujan Samaj Party BSP even as the Congress condemned her remarks."It is a calculated move by the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Sonia Gandhi and her party are misguiding people by projecting that the BSP is against development," Mayawati said. The two parties are at loggerheads as Mayawati Monday cancelled land allotment for a rail coach factory in Gandhi's Rae Bareli constituency and then imposed prohibitory orders to prevent the Congress president from addressing a rally. In reply, state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi told reporters Wednesday evening: "Her statement only reflects her opportunism and her decision reflects the anarchy in the state." Rubbishing Mayawati's accusations that the Congress-led central government is adopting a step-motherly attitude towards Uttar Pradesh, Joshi said the state government was not able to spent Rs.120 billion Rs.12,000 crore allotted to it till March 31, 2008."The chief minister's priority is only to spend public money on private ventures like parks and statues and has even failed in implementing central schemes like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the public distribution system," Joshi alleged.Mayawati earlier said: "The central government is just not interested in all-round development of the state as it has still not released a penny of the Rs.800 billion package we sought for the uplift of the state."The Congress alleged that Mayawati's decision to implement prohibitory orders in Rae Bareli barely 24 hours before Gandhi's Tuesday rally reflected her autocratic style."The Rae Bareli administration said section 144 has been imposed as a precautionary step in view of the festivals. However, there will be no law and order problem if Mayawati holds a rally there," Joshi taunted.Mayawati has announced a public rally in Rae Bareli but the date has not been declared as yet.Joshi alleged Mayawati had always created hindrance in all the developmental projects of the central government and this has resulted in most of the industrial units moving out of the state or looking for options in other states."The Congress will launch a statewide agitation to expose the government and like our president, we are also ready to go to jail for the betterment of the people," Joshi claimed.--Indo-Asian News Servicerr/dd/am/vm423 Words*15102132

2008-10-15 10:00:00Don't put money in foreign banks: West Bengal minister
ECO11Economy/NationalDon't put money in foreign banks: West Bengal ministerKolkata, Oct 15 IANS In the backdrop of the global financial crisis, West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta Wednesday urged people not to keep their money in foreign banks and even in banks having significant foreign equity holdings."Please, don't put money in foreign banks and even in Indian banks having significant holding of equity by foreign institutions, whose names I would not like to take," Dasgupta said while inaugurating a branch of a rural bank at Barasat near Kolkata."Your money is safe only in public sector banks, cooperative banks and regional rural banks," the minister said. His statements came a day after the central committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI-M adopted a resolution, urging the United Progressive Alliance UPA government to take lessons from the US financial crisis. "The CPI-M has consistently maintained that the finance-driven imperialist globalisation is unsustainable. The UPA government has been pushing for the very same policies, which have spelt ruin for the financial system in the US and many European countries," it said."The government has been assiduously pushing for financial sector liberalisation in the past four years. The manner in which the US is trying to solve the crisis by bailing out the investment bankers and financers at the expense of the taxpayers will only worsen the situation," it added. --Indo-Asian News ServiceAG/sj/jg240 Words15101925

2008-10-15 06:25:06Mayawati accuses Congress of hatching conspiracy, orders inquiry Lead
NAT26National/PoliticsMayawati accuses Congress of hatching conspiracy, orders inquiry LeadLucknow, Oct 15 IANS Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has accused Congress chief Sonia Gandhi of "hatching a political conspiracy" against the Bahujan Samaj Party BSP over withdrawal of land in Rae Bareli for a rail coach factory and ordered an inquiry into the issue."It is a calculated move by the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Sonia Gandhi and her party are misguiding people by projecting that the BSP is against development," Mayawati said at a press conference here Wednesday. She said an inquiry, to be completed in three days, was being ordered so that the Congress party could not misuse the issue further to strengthen its vote bank."In order to give a befitting reply to the Congress party, the BSP will also organise a rally in Rae Bareli whose date will be announced later," said Mayawati who had cancelled a rally to be held there by Sonia Gandhi Tuesday."If the Congress really wants development in the true sense, why is the party not taking up any development projects in Bundelkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh" The Mayawati government had Saturday night taken back the land allotted for the rail coach factory project of the central government in Rae Bareli, which is the parliamentary constituency of Sonia Gandhi and is located 80 km from Lucknow.Mayawati said in order to gain political mileage, the Congress could not think of development outside Rae Bareli and Amethi, the latter being the constituency of Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul.Mayawati alleged that the same Congress party which was unnecessarily giving a political colour to the rail coach factory issue had always been opposing development projects undertaken by the BSP."The Congress party has always opposed various projects, including the Ganga Expressway, the Yamuna Expressway and others. Is it not anti-development" asked Mayawati. She said in order to divert public attention from its inability to create better job opportunities for youths, the Congress party was "indulging in a political drama"."Claims related to providing job opportunities to youths in the rail coach factory are baseless. Had the government been serious over this issue, it would have thought of this much earlier," said Mayawati."I want to ask Sonia Gandhi and the Congress party, how many youths have been employed in their tenure of over four years at the centre now," she added. Mayawati also accused the Congress-led central government of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards Uttar Pradesh. "The central government is just not interested in all-round development of the state as it has still not released a penny of the Rs.800 billion package we sought for the uplift of the state," she said.-Indo-Asian News Serviceasit/pg/jg481 Words*15101557
