Dogs with Boots to check Islamic mosques and homes (07-07-20

The UK police have no option but to provide rubber soled bootees to their sniffer dogs when examining Islamic homes and religious places. As per Islamic religion the animal is considered to be ‘haram’. These bootees will be similar to the woolen boots which babies wear in winters. A spokes person from ACPO or the Association of Chief Police Officers said that since the Muslims were sensitive to their cultures they had to resort to alternative measures for using their sniffer dogs. The guidelines for the use of sniffer dogs are being redrafted by the ACPO. The cultural sensitivities will only be considered till they don’t interrupt with their operating policies.

Though most of the British public would find the idea amusing or ridiculous, there are various Muslim worshippers who have got offended because dogs had been brought inside the mosque. But since these highly trained canines are indispensable during searches for explosives they have no alternatives. The police cannot commit the use of these dogs on Islamic property but 7th of July is a crucial date as it marks the anniversary of suicide bombings in London. Security forces are on alert and are trying to resolve all security measures without any offence to the Muslim community.

The past few weeks had the Muslim community objecting to the use of dogs. For example, the Tayside Police in Scotland had to apologize after an advert that featured a German shepherd puppy was used. Some shopkeepers even refused to display these posters by the police. The British Transport Police indicated that any Muslim passenger, traveling by train, could not use aversion to dogs or body scans as an excuse and would be subject to random searches for security reasons. But in spite a tolerance towards religious sensitiveness the British police had made it clear that any unkind behavior towards their best friend could not be tolerated.

Caroline Kisko, of the Kennel Club, commented that the dogs would not be made to wear any clothing that would cause them distress. The use of bootees as a concern for distress is yet not researched on though many dogs are dressed in jackets and bows the dog’s repugnance is still not known. Despite this cultural dislike for dogs the British still rely on them as the best source of security measures and their sniffer dogs are certainly their best pals.
